“Pretty speeches still unspoken/
Perfect circles in the sand/
Rules and promises I’ve broken/
That I still don’t understand.”
from his song Feeling Mortal

The honors are many, the legends are legion. Backed by Merle Haggard’s band, the Strangers, three time Grammy-winner Kris Kristofferson is a national treasure; he returns to Folsom in fine form with an ensemble that is hard to resist.

The honors are many, the legends are legion. Backed by Merle Haggard’s band, the Strangers, Mr. Kristofferson has reportedly rediscovered his stride, akin to when he, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson reprised The Highwaymen for the 2014 Grammys. “The first time I met Merle Haggard in Nashville, people told me to stay away from him because I had a beard and the hair. I was supposed to be one of them long-haired hippies, and we were friends from the moment we met.” A three-time Grammy-winner, Mr. Kristofferson’s songs — “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” and “For the Good Times” and more — were all chart-topping hits that helped redefine country songwriting. As early as 1987 it was estimated that more than 450 artists had recorded Kristofferson’s compositions. More recently, The Cedar Creek Sessions was recorded live in June 2014. Released in time for Kristofferson’s 80th birthday in 2016, the double-CD set is a snapshot of the legendary songwriter in the twilight of his life. In 2014, Kristofferson was honored with a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award and the PEN Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award.
