based on the story by the Nobel Laureate Mo Yan
Presented by the Confucius Institute at University of California, Davis, the California International Film Festival/Davis Chinese Film Festival, and the Qingdao Song and Dance Theatre, Red Sorghum is a reflection of the unique culture of Shandong Province through the lens of a village distillery. The passion and resilience of the villagers are as strong as the liquor made from Old World cereal grass sorghum. Winner of Wenhua Grand Prize, the highest award for arts given by the Ministry of Culture in China.
Red Sorghum is an adaptation of the story by Mo Yan, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012. It presents the life story of the author's ancestors in Shandong. In 1987, the director Zhang Yimou made the movie Red Sorghum. Combining the novel and the movie, this dance drama presents the villagers' valor during WW II.
